TIGER
Class: MAMMALIA
Order: CARNIVORA
Family: FELIDAE
Genus: PANTHERA
Species: TIGRIS
The largest of any cat, and amongst the largest of Asia's land predators. Historically, tigers had a range stretching as far west as Asia Minor, and as far east as Japan. Today, wild tiger populations are rather fragmented, with about 3,900 in the wild. It is believed that all tigers belong to two different subspecies - those of the continent and those of the islands, particularly Sumatra. Traditionally, other tiger populations, such as the Amur Tiger and some now extinct populations, like the Java Tiger, were too classed as subspecies up till 2017.
